Broken Tooth
If you have had some kind of injury and part of your tooth has been damaged or knocked out, or perhaps a crown has become displaced. If so, contact the practice right immediately for an emergency check-up. If you clean out your mouth with warm water it will help relieve the pain You can also use a cold compress to reduce any swelling.
A Knocked out Tooth
If your tooth has been knocked out, believe it or not, there is a chance that we can save it. However, there are things that you can do to help preserve the tooth. If it is knocked out and you still have it, gently lift it up by its crown and give it a careful wash. The reason for this is that there may be gum tissue remaining, so we suggest you leave the gum tissue in place, and if you can, put the tooth back in the empty socket. If this isn’t possible, put milk into a container and put the tooth inside it, or you can put the tooth inside your mouth against your cheek until you get to the dentist. The sooner you call us to arrange an emergency appointment, the more chance we have to save your tooth.
You suspect your jaw is broken
Apply a cold cloth, or preferably a frozen element wrapped around a tea towel to the area to ease the swelling. Remember, an injury or accident involving your jaw may mean you need to attend your local hospital.
Bitten your lip or tongue
If you bite your lip or tongue by accident and you are in pain, apply a cold compress to the inside of your mouth to reduce the swelling. If you are losing blood, you may need to visit your closest emergency room because you may need stitches. If you cannot halt the bleeding with a compress or cloth, then this is the best course of action.
You have toothache
There are a number of reasons for toothache, but it is mainly due to dental infection. If your toothache has become worse over time, use warm water to rinse your mouth. You may also choose to gently floss to remove any food that might cause infection. A specialist mouthwash can work to stop surplus bacteria. You need to contact us at The Dental Surgery as soon as possible in order to receive treatment and prevent the spread of infection.
Painkillers can sometimes lessen the pain of sore teeth and gums, but you should not let them rest on your gums because it can cause the gum tissue to burn. Do not rely on painkillers if you have dental pain, as they allow more time for the infection to spread.
